Making History at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

It was definitely one for the pool room. For the first time in its 43 year history, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade came off the streets and into the stadium.

I was in the commentator’s box at the Sydney Cricket Ground announcing the performers and floats live with Kyle Olsen, wearing my best voice over frock just in case there was a passing camera.

On show to the world was the creative output of our community in 133 entries, responding to the theme 'Rise'.

The stadium was at capacity. It was the first time people had gathered in such large numbers post Covid lock down and the sound and visuals were amazing! Hearing my own voice amplified as never before was a knock out experience. I'd been announcing the DJs for the Mardi Gras party for years, but this was next level.

For those who couldn't join us in the flesh, SBS had it On Demand for the free and global live stream.
